SSDEC Recognizes Diane Tourangeau with the 2026 Jill Taylor Above and Beyond Award

The South Slave Divisional Education Council is pleased to recognize Diane Tourangeau of Chief Sunrise Education Centre as the recipient of the 2026 Jill Taylor Above and Beyond Award.

The award recognizes an individual whose volunteerism, dedication and willingness to go beyond their regular responsibilities makes a meaningful difference in the lives of children and youth.

Diane serves as the Dene Language and Culture Instructor at Chief Sunrise Education Centre, but her contribution reaches far beyond her formal role. She has become a driving force behind land-based and cultural learning at the school, helping organize family camps, cultural gatherings, seasonal activities and on-the-land experiences that bring students, families, Elders and community members together. 

Her work has also helped create a strong sense of belonging within the school community. Through her leadership, students experience Dene language, traditional knowledge, cultural practices and land-based learning as living parts of their everyday education. She has also supported and mentored staff as they deepen their understanding of Indigenous perspectives, protocols and ways of learning. 

Diane is known for giving generously of her time without seeking recognition, whether she is supporting families, mentoring staff, preparing cultural activities or encouraging a student. Her commitment to children, culture and community reflects the spirit of the Jill Taylor Above and Beyond Award.
